The Schimdt Monument.

The crumbling memorial to Danish Sailor, Karl Schmidt, at Elliot Beach, Chennai, India who lost his life at the spot on 30 December, 1930 in saving the lives of two British school boys after a ship wreck.

It is difficult to contemplate that such self sacrifice can mean little with the passage of time but it seems, given the state of the monument and the general ignorance of what such a distinctive feature on their beach stands for amongst the locals today, that this particular sacrifice may indeed mean precious little to the beach goers today and that this monument is now perhaps seen as an inconsequential colonial legacy.
